Hire Weird, Celebrate Failure: Building an Innovative Work Culture

by Winslow Swart

When University Health System’s president and CEO George Hernandez told me that he “hired weird” as a means towards fostering creativity and innovation and essential for staying ahead of the talent engagement curve, I became an instant fan. Creating a workplace environment that encourages out-of-the-box thinking, experimentation, and a tolerance for failure can be the key to unlocking groundbreaking ideas and solutions. Here are some strategies for building a creative and innovative workplace:

Hire for Diversity and Uniqueness

Instead of solely focusing on qualifications and experience, prioritize diversity of thought and personality. Look for individuals who bring different perspectives, backgrounds, and skills to the table. Embrace the "weird" – those who think differently or have unconventional approaches can often spark innovation in unexpected ways.

Encourage Collaboration and Cross-Pollination

Break down silos and encourage collaboration across teams and departments. Create spaces and opportunities for employees to interact and exchange ideas freely. Cross-functional projects and brainstorming sessions can lead to the convergence of diverse viewpoints and the birth of innovative solutions.

Provide Resources for Exploration

Give employees the time, resources, and autonomy to pursue their creative interests and passions. Allow for experimentation and risk-taking without the fear of immediate consequences. Providing access to tools, technologies, and training programs can empower employees to explore new avenues and develop innovative solutions.

Embrace Failure as a Learning Opportunity

Cultivate a culture where failure is not stigmatized but celebrated as a natural part of the innovation process. Encourage employees to take calculated risks and learn from their mistakes. Create a safe environment where individuals feel comfortable sharing their failures and insights openly, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

Promote Flexibility and Adaptability

Embrace flexibility in work arrangements and processes to accommodate different work styles and preferences. Allow for experimentation with alternative work schedules, remote work options, and flexible environments. Adaptability to change is crucial in fostering innovation, as it allows teams to respond quickly to emerging opportunities and challenges.

Recognize and Reward Creativity

Acknowledge and celebrate innovative ideas and contributions from employees at all levels of the organization. Establish recognition programs, awards, or incentives to incentivize and reward creativity. Publicly recognize individuals or teams who have demonstrated innovative thinking or achieved notable results, reinforcing the importance of creativity within the organization.

Lead by Example

Foster a culture of innovation from the top down by demonstrating a willingness to embrace change, take risks, and think creatively. Leaders should encourage open communication, listen to diverse perspectives, and actively support innovative initiatives. By modeling the behaviors and attitudes conducive to creativity, leaders can inspire and empower their teams to do the same.

Building a creative and innovative workplace culture requires a concerted effort and commitment from all levels of the organization. By embracing diversity, encouraging collaboration, celebrating failure, and promoting a culture of creativity, businesses can create an environment where innovation thrives, driving long-term success and growth.
